A forgotten single recorded on the Isle of Man in the 1990s has captured a new audience after featuring alongside hits from Madonna, Lenny Kravitz and Pulp in on‑demand series Love Story.

Carl Holden, a member of the Manx band Harvey, explained that the track titled Silver had not seen "the light of day" since its original 1996 recording session. Thirty years later, Silver has accumulated more than 87,000 streams, a surge directly linked to its placement in Love Story, which is available for streaming on Disney+.

Silver’s renewed visibility arrives 13 years after Stuart Watret, the vocalist on the track, received a diagnosis of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS), a rare neuromuscular condition that has dramatically affected Stuart Watret’s speech capabilities.

Stuart Watret reflected on the irony of the situation, stating: "The irony is not lost, the voiceless one is now being heard by millions."

Silver is an ode to youthful romance, originally penned while Stuart Watret was a university student. The track now appears in Love Story alongside singles from household names such as The Stone Roses, Radiohead and Ella Fitzgerald.

The recording

The partnership between Carl Holden and Stuart Watret began at university, where Carl Holden answered an advert placed by Stuart Watret in the music‑focused publication Melody Maker. Their collaboration quickly progressed to a recording session for Silver on the Isle of Man.

Stuart Watret, now 57, grew up on the Isle of Man and was already familiar with a modest recording studio located in Douglas, a studio administered by Dave Armstrong, who also contributed bass guitar to Silver.

Carl Holden, originally from Oldham, described the financial constraints they faced at the time: "We weren't earning much money and just left university so we were pretty skint."

In exchange for studio time, Carl Holden and Stuart Watret painted the back of Dave Armstrong’s house, effectively bartering creative labour for recording access.

Stuart Watret, who continues to reside on the Isle of Man, composed Silver while employed in a cleaning role in Preston. The lyrical content draws directly from Stuart Watret’s personal experience of a long‑distance romance.

Stuart Watret recounted: "Once I worked out how to get an outside line in the office, I'd often call my girlfriend who was from the island but studying in York; and suggest I jump on the train."

Stuart Watret added that the words of Silver were inspired by the hopeful anticipation of that train journey from Preston to York, encapsulating the optimism and joy characteristic of young love.

Love Story

Love Story is a nine‑part limited series produced by the American broadcaster FX and streamed in the United Kingdom and the Isle of Man via Disney+. The narrative chronicles the romance between John F. Kennedy Jr and Carolyn Bessette, the couple that dominated 1990s tabloid coverage and were popularly termed the “Golden Couple”.

The series explores the pressures of high‑society life, the relentless glare of fame, and ultimately the tragic conclusion of the couple’s story. In 1999, a private plane carrying John F. Kennedy Jr, Carolyn Bessette and three additional passengers crashed off the coast of Massachusetts, ending their lives in a single, devastating night.

Love Story quickly became the most‑watched limited‑series in the history of Disney+ at the time of its release.

In 2022, Stuart Watret approached a music‑placement agency that specialised in synchronising tracks with television and film projects, presenting Silver for consideration. Despite the initial outreach, it was not until late 2023 that the agency confirmed momentum on the project.

By February 2024, Silver had secured a spot on the official Love Story playlist as well as on companion playlists distributed across major streaming services, where it sits alongside tracks by Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Pulp and The Beastie Boys.

Stuart Watret described the viewing experience as a temporal journey: "I was transported back to the 1990s because of the music."

Stuart Watret also reflected on the juxtaposition between well‑known artists and the relative obscurity of Harvey, noting: "Big tunes, big names but it hasn't escaped us that we are the unknowns in the line‑up."

The inclusion of Silver among an illustrious roster of songs caused Carl Holden and Stuart Watret to feel as though they were still pinching themselves in disbelief.

From the 1990s to streaming platforms

After the 1996 recording session, Harvey continued to write material and performed live gigs in London. The momentum of the band, however, gradually waned as personal responsibilities and life changes took precedence.

Carl Holden admitted that the duo “pressed whatever flesh we could,” indicating a resilient but ultimately limited effort to sustain a professional music career during the pre‑digital era.

The advent of streaming technology opened a new channel for discovery. In 2017, Carl Holden and Stuart Watret located the original digital master of Silver, uploaded the file to major streaming platforms, and thereby introduced the song to a fresh, global audience.

The renewed exposure set the stage for the eventual placement in Love Story, linking the track to a broader cultural conversation about 1990s music and popular media.

Health challenges and artistic resilience

Five years before the 2017 streaming upload, Stuart Watret received a diagnosis of primary lateral sclerosis (PLS). Stuart Watret recalled the moment of symptom onset: "A month after my 40th birthday I was out jogging. I stopped to catch my breath and noticed one of my feet felt funny."

As the disease progressed, both Stuart Watret’s voice and mobility were increasingly compromised. Yet, Stuart Watret maintained a sense of humour, joking that Carl Holden often reminded Stuart Watret that "the world lost a mediocre guitarist."

Despite these formidable obstacles, the creative partnership between Carl Holden and Stuart Watret persisted, leveraging emerging technologies to sustain musical output.

Artificial intelligence as a new collaborator

Recent advances in artificial‑intelligence‑driven vocal synthesis have enabled Carl Holden to generate new recordings that emulate Stuart Watret’s original timbre. By feeding the AI system with archival vocal material from Stuart Watret, Carl Holden can now produce fresh vocal tracks that sound indistinguishable from Stuart Watret’s authentic voice.

Carl Holden described the process as akin to becoming a “voice donor,” stating: "I could sing the song and then make it sound like Stuart Watret, I've become a voice donor almost so for him to have this voice again is fantastic."

With this technology in place, Harvey has pencilled in plans for two new albums, ensuring that Stuart Watret’s artistic legacy will continue to evolve despite physical limitations.

Enduring connection to the Isle of Man

Thirty years after the original recording session, Carl Holden and Stuart Watret still regard the Isle of Man as a formative and beloved musical environment. Carl Holden observed, "For the size of the island, the amount of bands you can see any week is staggering."

Carl Holden further expressed that "the Isle of Man feels like our musical home," underscoring the deep‑rooted sense of place that shaped Harvey’s early creative identity.

The narrative of Harvey, Carl Holden, and Stuart Watret illustrates how a modest, locally recorded single can experience a renaissance decades later, propelled by contemporary streaming platforms, curated television soundtracks, and innovative AI tools.

As millions of listeners engage with Silver through Love Story and associated playlists, the song’s journey from obscurity to global awareness stands as a testament to the enduring power of authentic songwriting and the unpredictable pathways of musical discovery.
