    'Extremely heartbreaking': President on loss of lives in Bihar temple stampede

    President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday condoled the loss of lives in a stampede at a temple in Bihar and prayed for the swift recovery of those injured.

    At least eight devotees, mostly women, were killed and five injured in the stampede at the Sheetla Mata temple in Nalanda district on Tuesday.

    “The news of the death of numerous devotees in a stampede at a temple in Nalanda, Bihar, is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to all the bereaved families. I pray for the swift recovery of all those who have been injured,” Ms. Murmu said in a post on X in Hindi.

    The President, who is on a day-long visit to Bihar, addressed the convocation ceremony of Nalanda University in Rajgir city.-- PTI

    Toll in Nalanda temple stampede has gone up to nine and all the victims are said to be women… six of the victims have been identified while, police is identifying the remaining three victims, confirms Nalanda DM Kundan Kumar.

    Deep Nagar SHO Rajmani put under suspension

    Nalanda Suprientendenr Bharat Soni confirmed that Deep Nagar Station House Officer (SHO) Rajmani has been put under suspension over the incident. The district administration has also constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident.

    Eight women killed in stampede at temple in Bihar

    At least eight women were killed in a stampede at a temple in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Tuesday, Police said.

    The incident took place due to a heavy rush of devotees at the Shitala Mata temple on Tuesday morning, a senior officer said.

    Bihar Sharif Assistant Superintendent of Police Noorul Haque said, “At least eight women died in the stampede at Shitala Mata temple on Tuesday morning. Police personnel and officials of the district administration have reached the spot, and the rescue work is on.” -- PTI

    Ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s visit to Bihar on Tuesday (March 31, 2026), it is said that district administration had deployed most of police force in security arrangement for her in Rajgir.

    Bihar Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit has been instructed to initate a probe into the incident and submit a report to the government.

    Bihar Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary, who is also government in-charge of Nalanda Districts, has confirmed the death of at least eight people in the tragedy.

    Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also expressed grief over the incident and announced ₹6 lakh in ex gratia compensation (₹4 lakh from State disaster management department and ₹2 lakh from Chief Minister’s relief fund).

    Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and State Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar have expressed grief over the incident and assured all possible help would be provided to the victims.
